I think I might try doing a rally cross for the first time with a coworker of mine. The thing is I'm nervous about damaging my brand new ST (4k miles) in the process... I bought it with the intent to track it but would anyone have suggestions on how to protect the paint and stuff from damage? I've read that plastidip or just painters taper will work. What do you guys recommend?

It really depends on how much prep time you have. If you have a lot of free-time, do the plasti-dip. You'll need to do the front fenders, hood, and bumper. You'll probably also want to do the back fenders (from the door back) and bumper. Make sure to use at least 2 lighter base coats followed by 5-6 heavier coats. This will allow it to actually protect the paint and be easy to peel.

If you don't have much time, painters tape will work, though if there's mud it won't hold very well. You could also just go all out and plasti-dip the whole car if you'd like. It's quite a bit cheaper than having a paintjob done.

I have no useful advice at all, but if you do it, please post pictures/videos/detailed written accounts of the experience!

I don't know where you are, but if you're in the snow belt, it's a lot less risky than a gravel event. I ran a Miata at a snowy rallycross a few years ago and had no trouble or damage at all. But I've also run gravel events without damage, too. I do understand not wanting to bang up your new shiny, though. I've been hesitant to try it in my BRZ, even though RWD rallycross is awesome.

I recommend you don't rallycross a brand new car that's still under factory warranty and most likely bank-owned.

Yeah that's really where my apprehensiveness comes from. I probably will still go but won't thrash it that hard..

Cool, I will probably dip it then.
